Mich. lawmakers vote to expand rights of biological dads; current law presumes husband is dad

The Michigan Legislature has sent Gov. Rick Snyder bills that would give biological fathers some rights to their children, even if the mothers were married to other men at the time of a child's birth.

  1. Now if governor Snyder would get rid of the guy that's the so called dad to 6,000 kids in foster care that are court wards that would be great. O I'm talking about bill johnson. He is not these children dad and will never be!!!!. So real dads stand up fight for your kids

  2. I'm surprised by the presumption of the husband. I guess State vary a lot--in California at least, perhaps because of the aggressive nature of child support enforcement, government agencies check. I do have problems with school and my children -- even thought my children share my last name, I am forced to provide documentation. Whereas my ex-wife's husband because he shows up with her, and despite having a different last name, has never had to show proof to the school for records etc. I read a lot into this. We are in area of unknown because while theoretically father's rights are equal and cannot be abridged, this is in reality the case mainly for child support. The presumption that the mother is the more suitable parent is a difficult barrier to overcome in the legal system. At least in Solano County California, the Courts say equal custody is the policy, but in reality this is only the case if the mother agrees.
